A Pokemon card price checker should answer one question well: is this specific card, in this condition, actually worth what someone is asking for it right now? Most tools that call themselves a "price checker" actually show you a general market-value estimate for the card in the abstract — useful for browsing, not so useful for the moment you're standing at a table with cash in hand and thirty seconds to decide. RarityPay is built for that second moment.
How the price check actually works
Photograph the front of the card, or paste a marketplace listing. RarityPay identifies the exact card — name, set, number and variant — by matching your photo against the real pokemontcg.io catalog rather than trusting a vision model's raw guess. Once the card is identified, RarityPay pulls that card's live market price, sourced from TCGplayer's pricing data via the pokemontcg.io API, and shows it to you with the date it was last refreshed sitting right next to the number. If you type in an asking price, the app compares it against that real market price and tells you plainly whether you're looking at a price below, in line with, or above today's market — never a "buy" recommendation, just the comparison.
Why "sourced and timestamped" matters more than it sounds
Sold prices for collectible trading cards commonly differ from active listing/asking prices — sellers frequently ask more than cards actually sell for in recent transactions. A price checker that can't tell you when its number was last updated is asking you to trust a figure that might be weeks or months stale — in a hobby where a set's chase cards can move meaningfully within days of a new product release or a tournament result. Every price RarityPay shows carries the date it was pulled, in monospace, deliberately styled to look like data rather than opinion.

What we won't do
We won't tell you a card is "about to spike," project a future price, or wrap a number in urgency language designed to make you buy faster. If we don't have a real, current price for a card's exact variant, we say so — "insufficient data" is a real state in the app, not a fallback we're embarrassed by. A price checker that always has an answer, even when it shouldn't, is a price checker that's making one up.
Prices are sourced from TCGplayer market data via the pokemontcg.io API and reflect that source's own refresh cadence, typically daily. RarityPay does not currently have a connected source for itemized individual sold listings or graded (PSA/CGC/TAG) sale prices — see the app for exactly what's shown as real versus marked unavailable, and the grading-cost comparison page for the full disclosure.
